Character Name: Samuel Zachary Guthrie
Codename: Cannonball
Date of Birth & Age: October 17, 1986; 25
Affiliation: Good ; New Mutants
Occupation: Adventurer, Mentor, Gym Teacher, Handyman
Powers: Sam has what he calls a ‘blast-field’ that surrounds his body. The field is made out of thermochemical energy that can propel Sam at great speeds, like that of a rocket (or cannonball if you will). When his powers are active, he’s totally impervious to harm.

Originally, Sam had little control over his blast field. He pretty much could only point himself in a direction and go in a straight line. But thanks to his training he has a great degree of maneuverability, he can control what parts of his body are covered by the field (think super-powered punches), as well as extend his energy out to protect other people from harm.

Unknown if this is a part of his mutant ability or not, but Sam’s pretty damn resilient. People back at home used to say that Sam had more lives than a barn cat. He’s fallen off things, landed on his head, and got right back up like nothing was wrong.
History:
When Sam was born, Lucinda and Ty thought that given their relative poverty that they’d probably be happy with the one kid, but more and more kept coming once Paige was born that it became something of a joke that people in the hospital would be taking bets when Lucinda would be back with the next one. Sam never really got jealous of his younger siblings, in fact he would offer to help take care of them. And boy did the young family ever need the help.

Ty Guthrie worked in a nearby full-time to provide for the family and Lucinda worked part-time second-hand store in nearby Burkesville once the older siblings could watch their younger siblings. Sam, took it upon himself to take responsibility for doing after school pick-ups and the like, allowing the older kids to have whatever social lives they wanted to.

With so many mouths to feed, money was pretty tight. The Guthries didn't live particularly extravagantly, but they tried their best to provide for the kids. Sam would frequently let his needs go unheeded, instead trying to scrounge up his own money by doing odd jobs for neighbors when he could get a free moment. Things for the family got even worse when Ty died of a condition related to his job in the mines when Sam was still in high school. The family was a mess after that. With the loss of a primary income, the family almost lost the farm.

Sam didn't hesitate to take on a job to help provide for his family. His mom argued and tried to tell Sam that she could provide for the family--that he needed to stay in school, but Sam couldn't just sit by and do anything. He got himself a job working as a farm hand for one of the better off members of the church that took . At first it was only an after-school and on-weekends gig where he worked in the sales office, but with his family strapped for cash, he took on more and more hours. He didn’t have much of a social life, but his family needed him.

Sam's ability manifested when a friend got stuck in a burning barn while trying to save their cows. He friend was trapped under a beam and would have died when the barn collapsed if Sam's powers hadn't activated to blast the both of them out. People thought it was some kind of miracle and made a huge deal out of his status as a hero. Sam would rather they dropped it, but of course they couldn't.

Soon thereafter, rumors started floating around that Sam was a mutant. Once the rumors became more widespread, Sam lost his job. Things got really bad after that and were only alleviated when Professor Charles Xavier showed up to offer Sam a place at his school for mutants. Sam could finish up his high school education. The offer was nice, but Sam would only take it if he could also work for Xavier so he could send money back to his family. An arrangement was worked out at Sam was on a plane to New York within the week.

The initial separation from the family was hard. Sam pretty much called back to check in on how everyone was doing on a daily basis. He’d never left Kentucky and it scared the hell out of him. Eventually he started to settle into a routine and his daily calls--which were starting to get on his family’s nerves--had become a weekly thing. He’d never admit it, but having the freedom to not have to be the father-figure to his family was a huge weight off his shoulders. Sam could go back to having fun like a teenager should have.

Most teenagers weren’t a part of a mutant peace-keeping force, though. With the New Mutants, Sam not only got to live his greatest fantasy of becoming a sci-fi action hero, but he also built a second family. So even though he’s dabbled with X-Men membership a handful of times, he found himself back with his friends.
